The Three Steps to Building Your Story

Wondering where to begin in Storybuilder when crafting your own story? While Storybuilder is adaptable to your personal workflow, here's the Muse Storytelling team's best practices for getting started.

Three Steps to Building Your Story:

  1. Define the Purpose of Your Story. In the Keywords section, you'll have a clear way to define what you want your story to say, and what you want to leave the audience with, using 5 Keywords. These 5 Keywords are how you'll offer value to your audience, and ensure that your message, truth, or call to action is delivered effectively.
  2. Add Your Characters. One of the first questions we'll ask ourselves is, who is the main character in our story—the emotional core through which our audience will connect? You'll head to Story Elements then to add potential characters, select your main character (the Heart), secondary characters (Helpers) and add descriptions of each. For advanced storytellers, you'll strengthen your character development through the Big 3 Things that every strong character needs.
  3. Add Plot Points. Also in your Story Elements, you'll add the different moments, or beats, that take place in your story and will keep your audience connected from beginning, middle, to end of your story. You'll add pictures to represent each plot point through relevant places. And in advanced options, you'll enhance audience engagement by leveraging the 6 Essential Plot Points.
